Superstition
Superstitious - Superstition is present
in all cultures in any part of the world. It is the irrational belief
that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course
of events influences its outcome. It is a belief that is irrationally
maintained by ignorance of the forces of nature, or just by plain faith
in magic, miracles, or chance.
Examples of Superstition are:
- Black cat crossing the road
- Walking under a ladder
- Open an umbrella indoors
- Break a mirror
- Knock on wood
- Hold your breath while passing a cemetery
- Spill salt
- Cross fingers
- Friday the 13th
- Throw rice at weddings
- Ringing ear
- Rabbit's left foot
- Christen a boat with Champagne
- Etc.
Gamblers that rely on superstition in deciding their game strategy use astrology, old telephone books, and even dreams to choose between red and black or odd and even. As the odds are even, it does not really matter, but it makes the player feel better about his/her decision. In games where the odds are not even, like Blackjack, some gamblers also like to rely on superstition, but they will only like their system as long as they win. And I would just call that luck. There is no science in superstition. It is above all a belief. It is therefore important to note that superstitious systems have NO influence on results whatsoever, no matter what game you play.
